Michigan Corps Fellows Spotlight: Shawn Daghigh

Shawn joined Michigan Corps' Fellows Program this fall to support the work of our Kiva Detroit initiative! We're excited to introduce Shawn with a recap on the following conversation about his experience as a Fellow!

What drew you to the opportunity to join Michigan Corps' Fellows program?
I grew up in Michigan, and even when I lived for a time in Colorado, I still saw Michigan as my home. Michigan Corps is helping Michigan to regain the economic prosperity it was once famous for by reaching out to local small business entrepreneurs for whom Kiva Detroit can lend a hand in getting their business up and running. When I learned about Michigan Corps and their efforts to strengthen local communities in our state, I decided that I wanted to be a part of it!

Tell us a bit about your day to day work as a Fellow.
Every day I am in contact with new business owners nominated by our Corps members who have great ideas for their business, but need a hand. I support local entrepreneurs in finding the resources available through our Team Kiva Detroit network and walk them through the process of obtaining funding for their businesses. I also help Michigan Corps with other aspects of their day to day operations. From networking opportunities to investigating marketing strategies, I have been involved every day in Michigan Corps' efforts to increase awareness about the organization and their ability to help local entrepreneurs through Kiva Detroit.

What do you hope to do after your Fellowship?
I want to find avenues to continue helping my local community. I hope some day to bring my experience and passion for small business assistance and the drive to support my local community to the corporate environment.

What's your favorite Michigan memory?
Visiting Mackinaw Island with my wife, who had previously never seen the island! Only horses and bicycles are used on the island, as cars are not allowed. This, along with the fact that all the shops on the island are locally owned small businesses, gives the community an old-time feel, which I love!
